Find Dairy-Related Opportunities for Upper Level Students

Young people are the future of dairy in Pennsylvania, with nearly 20 percent of all dairy farms expected to transition to the next generation within the next 5 - 10 years. Exposing these dairy youth to the many opportunities found within dairy is key to maintaining and growing their interest in this dynamic industry. Here are a couple of events that will expose them to some of those opportunities.

The National 4-H Dairy Conference

Through a grant provided by the Pennsylvania Dairymen's Association, the Center for Dairy Excellence will sponsor a delegation from Pennsylvania to attend the National 4-H Dairy Conference Sept. 27 - 30 in Madison, Wis. Any 4-H member ages 15 - 19 can apply to attend. Penn State Extension handles the application process and selects up to two candidates in each county. All applications must be submitted to the local county extension office by July 21.

The Junior Dairy Management Contest

The Junior Dairy Management Contest will be held at the All-American Dairy Show on Tuesday, September 11, 2009. The contest provides an excellent opportunity for dairy youth to test their dairy management knowledge and skills, evaluate top quality animals, and receive experience in evaluation and decision-making. The contest is open to all 4-H and FFA members. For more information, click here.
