  • Most trusted advisors. Over 80 percent of respondents indicated that veterinarians and nutritionists are among the most trusted advisors for farm management and related advice.
  • Farm performance. Survey respondents were asked to rate a list of factors in improving the farm’s performance in the next 3 to 5 years on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 representing “not important” and 5 representing “extremely important.” When listed according to a mean score calculated for each item, the top three factors respondents viewed as most important were maximizing homegrown feed production, increasing milk components per cow, and improving udder health.
  • Feeding strategies. More than 78 percent of participants indicated they use a total mixed ration (TMR) to feed their cattle.
  • Diversification. When asked about their plans regarding diversification, the most frequently reported approach for diversifying dairy operations included beef on dairy (21.2%).
