September 25, 2024: Dairy Week in Review

Based on the USDA Milk Production report, August 2024’s U.S. milk
production equaled 18.8 billion pounds, a 0.1% dip year over year. Down
40,000 head from August 2023, August 2024’s milk cow numbers closed out
at 9.33 million. Production per cow jumped 8 pounds from August 2023 to
2,018. The U.S. milk supply remains tight, and replacement heifer numbers
are still low, which could explain the slight decrease in cow numbers.
However, improved genetics and feed efficiency could have influenced the
small bump in production per cow.
