Based on the most recent USDA Milk Production report, the U.S. milk output totaled 19.9 billion pounds for August 2026, a 1.7 percent increase from the same month the prior year. The national monthly average milk production per cow fell one pound year over year to 2,049 pounds. For August 2026, the U.S. milk cow numbers averaged 9.71 million head, up 167,000 head from August 2025 and up 15,000 from July 2026. After the small dip in cow numbers to 9.695 million head for July, the August U.S. milk cow numbers have rebounded to the record levels seen in June 2026.
