January 24, 2020: Why USMCA?

Last Friday, the U.S. Senate passed the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement (USMCA) in a bipartisan vote of 89 to 10. The next step is for President Trump to sign the legislation, which he is expected to do this week. Once that happens, the main factor holding back implementation is waiting for Canada’s House of Commons to ratify it. The House of Commons is expected to start discussions in preparation for a vote by the end of January. USMCA will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that began in 1993. I have mentioned in previous columns that the USMCA is good for U.S. dairy, but why? I thought I would take this week to point out some of the highlights of USMCA that benefit our dairy industry.
