Using Genomics to Select Heifers at Early Age
Chad Dechow, Associate Professor of Dairy Cattle Genetics, Penn State, will cover how genomic data can be used in selecting heifer calves for sale – including selection options for heifer inventory management, the use of beef semen for dairy heifers, and older cow – shifting herd dynamics.
Economics of Rightsizing of Dairy Heifer Herds
Michal Lunak, Dairy Educator, Penn State Extension, will review costs of raising heifers and how many heifers a dairy operation needs versus how many are produced. DHIA herd summary data will be used to demonstrate potential savings.
