The Monthly Call Will Be Held on Wednesday, November 19th at 1 pm

The Center for Dairy Excellence’s “All Things Dairy” monthly conference call aims to provide a platform for organizations and industry partners to share timely updates, resources, programs, and upcoming events relevant to the dairy community. The next call is scheduled for Wednesday, November 19 at 1 p.m. EST. A Pennsylvania dairy producer, local fire company chief, and an educator from Penn State Extension will provide fire safety and prevention tips, firsthand perspective, and advice for emergency preparedness planning.

“Dairy farms are busy operations with a lot of moving pieces, so fire safety and emergency preparedness are important parts of having a safe and proactive workplace for your team. We appreciate this month’s panelists who plan to share firsthand experiences and advice for preventing emergencies. We hope you can join us for this conference call,” shared Valerie Mason-Faith, Risk Education Manager at the Center for Dairy Excellence.

During the November 19th call, listeners will hear:

  • Personal story about a parlor fire on a PA dairy farm. Jennifer Metzler of Pleasant View Farms in Blair County, Pennsylvania will talk about an unexpected parlor fire, the aftermath, and recovery for their 3,700-cow herd. Jennifer will share the on-the-spot decisions her family had to make and steps they’ve taken to prevent this type of emergency from happening again.
  • Fire safety and prevention tips from a local fire chief. Randy Acker, the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company Chief, will talk through fire safety and prevention tips. Specifically for dairy producers, he will offer advice for barns and silos and share firsthand accounts.
  • Emergency response planning tips. Greg Martin from Penn State Extension will dive into emergency response planning, what that entails, what it might look like for your dairy farm, and how to make emergency preparedness a priority
